
A Press Conference jointly organized by MCPF Penang, RMP Penang Contingent, ASIS Malaysia and USM was held at the RMP Penang HQ Press / Media Room on 15th August 2019 with a two-prong focus on Cybersecurity and Cybercrime as well as to publicize and encourage participation at the forthcoming 5th International Security Seminar (The Wembley, A St. Giles Hotel, George Town on 24th/ 25th September 2019) In his address, YDH CP Dato’ Narenasagaran Thangaveloo highlighted that in from January to July 2019 alone, there were 731 reported Cybercrime cases in Penang involving total losses of MYR 20.6 million. He shared that amongst the latest Cybercrime scams were the Macau Scams, Love Scams,
e-Finance Scams, on on-line purchases. He added that these figures were a worrying trend compared to 956 cases in 2017 (MYR 19.3 million loss) and 1,031 cases in 2018 (MYR 29.7 million loss). In his address, MCPF Penang Chairman Y.Bhg. Dato’ Seri Syed Jaafar Syed Ali encouraged the public to attend the upcoming 5th International Security Seminar with the focused theme of “The Impact of Cyberspace on Conventional Crime: Addressing Critical Challenges and Strategies”. He highlighted that 9 specially selected speakers would be covering various key topics over the two days and amongst these would be the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners’ (ACFE) Malaysian chapter President Y.Bhg. Dato’ Sri Akhbar Satar, International Fraud Watchdog Ltd (IFW) Chief Executive Mr. Ken Gamble and renowned Criminologist Y.Bhg. Associate Professor Dato’ Dr. P. Sundramoorthy. YDH SAC Dato’ Mohamed Anil Shah, HOD CPCSD RMP Penang (cum MCPF Penang Vice-Chairman [I]) and YDH Supt Chelvam A/L Pillai. Deputy HOD Commercial Crime Investigation Department, RMP Penang helped to address questions from the Press / Media. MCPF Penang Secretary cum ASIS Malaysia Chairman Dr. EL Ching provided details of the upcoming Seminar. This Press Conference was supported by MCPF Penang Vice-Chairman (II) Rosli Mohamed Ali and MCPF Penang SLC Members Ridzuan Md Zain / JM Tan.
