MCPF Penang dialogues with Deputy Vice-Chancellor, USM on launching and display of Scam Awareness QR Code Posters at USM Campuses

A meeting was held between MCPF Penang and USM on Thursday 5th June 2025 – 10:15 am to 10:50 am at USM. In Attendance were: 1. Dato’ Seri Ong Poh Eng, Chairman, MCPF Penang; 2. Professor Dr. Azlan Amran, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, USM (Industry & Community Network); 3. Assoc. Professor Dr. Azeem Fazwan bin Ahmad Farouk, Director, Centre for Policy Research (CPR), USM / Also, MCPF Penang SLC ex-officio Member (USM); and, 4. Mr. Johnny Michael Tan, Secretary, MCPF Penang. The Key Objectives; A. To discuss how MCPF Penang can work in cognizance with USM and supported / in collaboration with PDRM can effectively increase the awareness on Scams and Cybercrimes amongst USM staff / students; B. Effective ‘Launching’ and roll out of the _PDRM Pulau Pinang – MCPF Penang Scam Awareness QR Code (Mini-App Infographics) Posters. Summary / Highlights: 1. Professor Dr. Azlan Amran welcomed Dato’ Seri Ong Poh Eng and Mr. JM Tan to the dialogue session; 2. Dato’ Seri Ong Poh Eng shared the background as to how PDRM Penang Contingent and MCPF Penang had collaborated on the Design and Development of the Scam Awareness QR Code (Mini-App Infographics) which had been launched on 20th February 2025; 3. Dato’ Seri Ong explained why and how this QR Code needs to reach out to the populace of USM at both its Main Campus and Engineering Campus at Nibong Tebal with pertinent and deeply ill effects of Scams; 4. JM Tan provided a verbal brief on the roots of MCPF, its Main Objectives, structure with unique roles / presence of PDRM at Federal / Stare and District levels. He also covered the availability of a Quick Guide (PowerPoint) on the Scam Awareness QR Code; 5. Professor Dr. Azlan Amran expressed that Scams were an ongoing concern for USM and that it had impacted its population. One of the grave concerns was that many students have faced such issues, in particular students from China; 6. It is envisaged that a USM Scam Awareness campaign that is being planned can be coordinated to gain maximum traction with an incorporated effort with PDRM / MCPF; 7. Professor Dr. Azlan Amran will work with key Focus Groups stakeholders and advise MCPF accordingly; 8. Meeting ended at 1150 hrs with appreciation noted all around. This was a very positive dialogue session and all parties looked forward to the USM focused ‘Launching’ event to be carried out as expediently as possible. Stay Tuned!
